Beverly Hills Cop 4 Moves Forward With Mark Molloy

The long-gestating Beverly Hills Cop 4 has gotten back on the rails after losing its directors. In the works at Netflix, the upcoming sequel was set to be co-directed by Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, the duo behind the successful legacy sequel Bad Boys for Life. The pair have since departed the project to work on the Batgirl movie for HBO Max, leaving Beverly Hills Cop 4 without a director.

Deadline reports that the film is now back on track with Mark Molloy on board to direct. This will be the first feature film for a major studio by Molloy. The filmmaker previously directed a series for the short-lived streaming service Quibi about fake news and earned acclaim with his Apple shorts The Underdogs and The Whole Working-From-Home Thing, the latter of which was shot by Oscar-winner Greig Fraser.

Jerry Bruckheimer is producing the sequel and Eddie Murphy will be reprising his role as Axel Foley. They have been trying to get Beverly Hills Cop 4 off the ground for years, with the film in development in Paramount at one point before moving over to Netflix in late 2019. It was reported in February that the movie had officially entered pre-production with Netflix receiving a California state tax credit of about $16 million to shoot the film.

Netflix remains tight-lipped about the project, so plot details are unclear. It also remains to be seen if any other franchise stars would be returning in addition to Murphy's Axel Foley. It's also unclear if Axel will be the main character or if someone new would take the central role, similar to the concept that was in mind for a sequel series that was passed on by CBS in 2013. The series would have featured appearances from Murphy but would have starred Brandon T. Jackson as Aaron Foley, Axel's son.

Eddie Murphy Was Waiting on the Right Script

Last year, Eddie Murphy said his condition to return was that the screenplay has to be just right. With the film moving forward with pre-production, it would seem that the right story is in place for Murphy to return, whatever that might entail. At the time, Murphy told Desus & Mero:

"They've been trying to make another Beverly Hills Cop for 15 years now. Right now, Netflix has it, and they're trying to develop a script. That's what we're supposed to be doing next. But, I'm not doing nothing until the script is right."

The Beverly Hills Cop franchise was launched with the original film in 1984, following Murphy as Detroit cop Axel Foley as he ventures to Beverly Hills to pursue his friend's killer. This was followed by Beverly Hills Cop II in 1987, this time following Axel returning to California to assist his friends in investigating an officer's shooting. The third installment of the trilogy, Beverly Hills Cop III, arrived in 1994 and picks up with Axel investigating his superior's murder at an amusement park called Wonderworld.
